WhO We Are
Historic East Towson is the place;
Northeast Towson Improvement Association (NeTIA) are the people.
Nestled in beside the Towson mall and Towson library, the Historic East Towson neighborhood is a historically Black community founded in 1829 by the manumitted slaves of the Hampton Estate -- our current neighbors are their direct descendants.
Once stretching from York Road and Bosley Avenue into North and West Towson, our neighborhood still stands a proud six blocks, full of the vibrant people, history, and culture that guide the Northeast Towson Improvement Association and our work.
HISTORY
1853
Daniel Harris, formerly enslaved on the Hampton Plantation, purchases 1.25 acres in East Towson. He is the first Black landowner in Baltimore County.

The Northeast Towson Improvement Association is founded to further our dedication to preserving the neighborhood's history and culture.
Today
Alongside our Juneteenth event and History Geeks Summer Camp, our neighborhood continues to thrive as a testament of our close-knit community!

A seventh-generation Historic East Towson resident, Nancy Goldring is an expert on the NeTIA community and our history. In addition to
hosting neighborhood tours, Nancy serves on
the leadership team for the Maryland Lynching Memorial Project and is the recipient of the
2022 Preservation Award from the Adelaide Bentley Community Preservation Alliance of
Baltimore County.
